Nancy J. Nielsen, 70

Nancy Jo Nielsen, 70, died on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, in Omaha, Neb. She was born on April 18, 1953, in Council Bluffs, to Ronald and Ida Ruth (Sanger) Coffman. She grew up in Minden and attended school there until eighth grade. Nancy attended high school at Tri-Center where she was a cheerleader for many sports. She graduated in the Class of 1971, and went on to further her education at the University of Northern Iowa where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Art Education. Nancy was united in marriage to John Nielsen on July 19, 1975, in Minden. They were blessed with two children, Jessica and Brent. Nancy was proud to be an art teacher and enjoyed helping and watching minds grow. She looked forward to hosting an art show each year where students were able to show off their creative works. Nancy retired in 2011 from the Woodbine School District. Nancy was a member of the Dow City United Methodist Church where she was very active in the bible study.

Nancy was known for her warm smile and kind heart. Her genuine love for her family was evident in everything she did. She adored her grandkids and cherished every moment spent with them. One of Nancy's greatest joys in life was traveling. She and John traveled to many places around the world. A couple of Nancy’s favorites were Greece and Italy. She also had a passion for cooking and baking. Her signature zucchini bread, pies and cookies were legendary among family and friends. Artistry flowed through Nancy's veins, her creativity knew no bounds and her paintings were nothing short of breathtaking. She left an indelible mark on many lives through her genuine kindness and unwavering love for her family and friends.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, John Nielsen of Dunlap; daughter, Jessica Grisamore of Denver, Colo.; son, Brent Nielsen and his wife Leeann of Smithtown, N.Y.; grandchildren, Matilda, Beau, Rhett, Gianna and Vanessa; sister, Cathy and her husband Cliff Killpack of Beebeetown; and many other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, at United Methodist Church in Dow City. Pastor Aaron Terwilleger presided over the service. The musicians were Deb Garrett and Cliff Killpack. The musical selections were “I’ll Fly Away” and “Just a Closer Walk with Thee”. The pallbearers were Steven Killpack, David Killpack, Steven Jorgensen, Michael Jorgensen, Jill Feigenbutz and Tara Rise. Nancy’s final resting place is at the Minden Cemetery.
