Mae L. Mikels, 100

Mae Leona (Williams) Mikels, 100, died on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022, at her home. She was born on July 2, 1922, to Clyde Adelbert and Clementine “Tina” (Plambeck) Williams near Portsmouth. Mae attended Hemlock country school. She worked for families in the area until she married Alfred Mikels on Sept. 7, 1944, at the St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School. The church had been hit by a tornado in 1940, and was not rebuilt yet. The couple farmed northwest of Portsmouth. Mae lived all of her life within five miles of where she was born.

Mae was a member of the St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and the Hemlock Neighborhood Club. She has kept a diary for many years, she liked to talk on the phone, loved reading, watching westerns, Polka Joe’s show and other dance shows. Mae also loved to watch Wheel of Fortune and the Price is Right. She loved to cook and liked to share what she cooked.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Al in 1988; son, Donnie and two brothers, Russell and Laverne Williams. She is survived by her five children, Ronald Mikels and his wife Patti of Kansas City, Mo., Wayne Mikels and his wife Mary of Portsmouth, Karla and her husband Jay Schaben of Dunlap, Galen Mikels and his wife Kathy of Woodbine and Brent Mikels and his wife Kelly of Woodbine; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Mikels of Portsmouth and Delores Hicks of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022, at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Reverend Michael Antoh and Reverend Daniel Petsche presided over the service. The music was by Denise Reinig and St. Mary’s Choir. The honorary pallbearers were Shannon Bernal, Genny Monks, Stacey Oldham, Kathy Mikels, Brenda King, Lara Mikels, Kari Podliska and Brianne Mikels. The pallbearers were Jon Shaffer, Clark Mikels, Daniel Mikels, Evan Mikels, Jace Mikels and Bryce Mikels. Mae’s final resting place is at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
